Homertons march towards being the new Stoke Newington continues as - TopicsExpress

Homertons march towards being the new Stoke Newington continues as yet another traditional pub is taken over by a pub chain that caters for cool young people. The Jackdaw and Stump was primarily a watering hole for black / Afro-Caribbean people, with a mixed crowd over the road at the Adam & Eve. Now both these places have been taken over and re-opened as food-based pubs with trendy beers and whatnot. Theyve changed the name from Stump to Star, which fits in with their other pubs, like the Star in Bethnal Green and the Star of Hackney Downs. In many ways this is a good thing: neither pub was particularly brilliant, and obviously neither of them were making money. Now there will be two decent pubs. But the affluence of inner London, fueled almost entirely by incomers from different parts of the country and from abroad, is chipping away at Londons identity. I have a feeling a lot of the locals from the Adam & Eve wont feel comfortable in there now. Im thinking particularly of the people in their 70s did bingo every Tuesday and the hospital porters whod been going in there after their shift, for the exact same drink, for 30 years. I hope Im wrong.
