Homework #2 A more mild example of tectonic culture would be the building housing Oosten restaurant. Its part of the citys larger project to green the area around the former Ruhorter Wharf, once home to 13 cranes once used to unload junk metal. A local firm in Darmstadt won the bid that uses glass, exposed concrete, steel and wood. The supporting trusses are visible from the outside. What I love most about the design is that the restaurant utilizes two of the remaining cranes, which were refurbished for the project. Both are incorporated into the design as well as the old crane rails. Essentially, the city of Frankfurt has taken a post-industrial area and turned it into brand new buildings (along with the new European Central Bank) using remnants of the past. As the economies of many western economies continue to change, I wonder how we may be able to adapt similar projects in different locations where there is movement away from industry. On a larger scale, how might large abandoned factories or rough, post-industrial city areas be converted into affordable housing, or green public space?
