Honiara Highway Project Officially Signed Governments of Japan and Solomon Islands have witnessed the official signing and exchange of Notes (detailed Design) for the Project for Upgrading of Kukum Highway. Sealing the deal today HE Mr. Morio Matsumoto Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Solomon Islands and the New Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, Hon. Manasseh Damukana Sogavare took part in the official signing ceremony. The signing will enable a total grant of Eighty Nine Million Japanese Yen (approx. 6 million Solomon Dollars) for the detailed design phase by the Government of Japan. The Project will consist of the six components: ➢ Upgrading of Kukum Highway from the City Council Roundabout to the Ministry of Fisheries in Kukum, extends about 3 km; ➢ Countermeasures against Traffic Congestion around the Central Market; ➢ Improvement of the City Council Roundabout; ➢ Widening of the New Mataniko Bridge; ➢ Replacement of the Old Mataniko Bridge, and; ➢ Soft Component for enlightenment of users including pedestrians. In a statement during the ceremony H.E Matsumoto “the project marks a new partnership between the two countries as a symbolic token of friendship between Solomon Islands and Japan. The project is not only for the paving of the existing road, and rebuilding two Mataniko Bridges, which severely damaged during the April Flood 2014, but also expanding its capacity to reduce the daily frustration experienced by Honiara residents caused by the continued traffic congestion. On the other hand Prime Minister Hon. Sogavare expressed his gratitude towards the Government and people of Japan for the continued commitment and support towards the people of Solomon Islands since 1978. He hopes that the traffic difficulties in Honiara will be eased and will contribute in ensuring that goods and services are distributed faster and efficiently, and that the people are able to gain access to basic social services. Meanwhile JICA Representative Mr. Shigeru Sugiyama emphasizes the importance of all stakeholders working together for the smooth implementation of the Project. The project is expected to kick off next year.
