Honor Flight Austin, Expedition #19 has been deemed extraordinarily successful and mission accomplished! By the grace of God, these 34 WWII Greatest Generation Vets took on a schedule that seriously would tax, if not mildly exhaust, a 24 year/old Green Beret. Better - these tough human icons, did it without incident! Another similarly sized Honor Flight group stayed at our same hotel last night. Their Vets all live in Colorado. At around 10pm, I noticed numerous Police lights strobeing in front of the hotel. My heart broke when I went outside and learned the Colorado group returns home today with out all the men they came to DC with. Their group experienced additional health related issues. Many other Honor Flight programs just do not have the community support necessary to travel with a trained medical staff. All Honor Flight Missions are funded by American Citizens like you and me. The Mission objective is simple, yet huge. We need to get our WWII Vets to DC to see the (only recently) completed WWII Memorial - built to formally honor their service. And - we gotta get them here before its too late. Estimates are that there are less than a million WWIIers left. The die at a rapidly accelerating rate of over 600 a day. 1200 have left this earth just since we departed Austin. We know one of them.....he was from Colorado. Allen Bergeron is the Gunny Sergeant who heads Veteran Programs for the City of Austin. He also is the General that runs Honor Flight Austin. He tells me we have over 90,000 WWII survivors in the 17 surrounding counties we serve. Lots still to do. Time is precious.
