Hope Center in Macomb is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that offers Macomb County residents the largest no-cost, grocery store style food pantry and one-stop-shop for human services that includes housing and utility assistance, free tax and legal services, veterans affairs, healthcare and more through various partner agencies. Each day, 100 families visit Hope Center’s “Marketplace” to receive both non-perishable boxed and canned food as well as a broad selection of fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products necessary for a balanced, healthy diet but often not affordable to struggling families.. Since opening in 2010, Hope Center has distributed over 6 million pounds of food to over 200,000 neighbors in need and over 300,000 pounds of food to local shelters and soup kitchens in our community. In order to meet the growing need, Hope Center relies heavily on food purchased from area food banks to feed the hungry. Much of the food Hope Center provides to clients must be purchased. The cost of food has doubled in recent years; often forcing us to limit the quantity of food given to families. To address this challenge, Hope Center is preparing to build an aquaponics system in the warehouse attached to the pantry located at 33222 Groesbeck Hwy; in Fraser. This self-sustaining ecosystem will enable Hope Center to provide large quantities of fresh, organic fruits, vegetables and tilapia fish 365 days a year. Money gratefully received through this program will enable Hope Center to continue purchasing food until the aquaponics system is fully operational and will help us purchase materials needed to build the system.
