Hope for Africa On This Day: In 1905 the Maji Maji Rebellion, sometimes called the Maji Maji War, began. It was an indigenous African resistance to colonial rule in the German colony of East Africa (present-day Tanzania) by several African indigenous communities (Matumbi, Ngindo, Ngoni, and other tribes) against the German rule in response to a policy designed to force African peoples to grow cotton for export, lasting from 1905 to 1908. Although the number of indigenous people killed by direct fighting was not that great, tens of thousands of indigenous African people starved afterward as German colonial forces killed livestock and burnt crops.
