PROGRESSIVE OAKLAND WOMEN FOR EMPOWERMENT & REFORM (P.O.W.ER) PRESENTS: 3rd ANNUAL DELILAH BEASLEY TEA Saturday, September 13, 2014, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Pardee Home Museum Gardens 672-11th Street, Oakland The tea is named in honor of Delilah Leontium Beasley (September 9, 1871 - August 18, 1934), a true Progressive and Powerful Oakland Woman! Ms. Beasley was an historian and newspaper columnist for the Oakland Tribune and the first African-American woman to be published regularly in a major metropolitan newspaper. Ms. Beasley was the first person to present written proof of the existence of California black pioneers in Slavery in California (1918) and in the classic, Negro Trail Blazers of California (1919), a pioneering work in the field of California black history. Each year P.O.W.E.R. selects an individual be acknowledged for exceptional contributions to women and our community. Our distinguished woman honoree, this year is Angela Glover Blackwell the founder and CEO of PolicyLink a leading voice in the movement to use public policy to improve access and opportunity for all low-income people and communities of color, particularly in the areas of health, housing, transportation, education, and infrastructure. A lawyer by training, she gained national recognition as founder of the Oakland (CA) Urban Strategies Council, where she pioneered new approaches to neighborhood revitalization. From 1977 to 1987, Angela was a partner at Public Advocates, a nationally known public interest law firm. As a leading voice in the movement for equity in America, Angela is a frequent commentator for some of the nation’s top news organizations,
