Horizon Herbs: Crimson Clover (Trifolium incarnatum) covering the mother between rows of cornstalks. When the corn reaches knee high we cultivate between the rows one last time and spread seed of crimson clover. Instead of getting more weeds, we get an earth protective carpet of nitrogen fixing greenness which nourishes the corn until harvest, and nourishes the soil well into the winter. This reminds me to remind you to bring the circle to completion--after harvest, spread cover crop seeds on the bare ground. At this time of year we recommend oats and peas combination (see horizonherbs) or winter rye. My understanding is that the earth is really our body--since what we eat comes from the soil, then by nourishing the soil we nourish ourselves. It is truly that simple.
