Horkan, Seniors Honored by Mystic Valley Lacrosse It was a banner day Monday as Mystic Valley honored lacrosse coach, Marty Horkan, on recording his 100th win and three graduating seniors (Brandon Kelso, Kyle Periera and Yousef Massoud) for their contributions to the team. The team continued the celebration by improving their record to 14-3 with a win over Matignon. Coach Horkan had high praise for his seniors: “Brandon Kelso: Brandon has been a 4 year starter and two year captain. Brandon has played long stick midfield and close defense over his four years. He has contributed 18 goals and 10 assists. Brandon is a humble, hard-working leader who understands the game of lacrosse and his ability to push transitional play sets him apart from any long pole we have had at Mystic Valley during my tenure. Kyle Periera: Kyle is a second year contributor who has really come along this year and has contributed some timely goals and a hard-nosed effort. Kyle has helped in all phases of the game and his intensity and enthusiasm will be missed. Yousef Massoud: Yousef is another player who played in 10th grade and made a return during his senior year. Yousef really increases our team speed. He has been a strong short stick defender and his stick skills have improved greatly throughout the season. Yousef does all of the things that a coach notices that do not always show up on the score sheet. His effort and work ethic have been invaluable to our success this year.” Asked to comment on winning 100 games he said: “Winning 100 games is a milestone that I have not given much thought to, but I am sure I will be able reflect on it when the season is done. The thing that stands out to me is how lucky I have been to work with so many incredible young men in my nine years as a head coach. I have always had supportive administrations, athletic directors and parents. I was lucky enough to be mentored by a coaching legend in Rick Mazzei, during my sub-varsity days at Malden Catholic and I have always had the best assistant coaches (especially current assistants Steve Ruelle who has been with me for 8 years and Mike McCarthy). Finally, and most importantly, I am thankful for the support of my wife and children that allows me to be around the sport I love each spring.” The team took care of business during the game posting a solid win. After trailing 1-0 after the opening faceoff the Eagles went on a run, scoring 8 unanswered goals to end the half. Matt Brown got his first start in goal and did a great job making 8 saves on the day. With the victory two records were set: the team got its 14th victory which matches the most wins in a season and Jayden Jean became the single season assist leader as he notched his 36th and 37th assists on the year. After nine point days from Jean (7 goals, 2 assists) and Jack Ryan (6 goals, 3 assists) the duo now have 98 and 96 points respectively on the year. Both players are closing in on the all- time points in a season record of 105 (held by Taylor Roseen) and both will likely eclipse the century mark with the team’s next game. The Eagles will be back in action Wednesday night as they take on Winthrop in an away contest.
