Truth-based Horsemanship Colt starting, restarting horses, rider and horse teams. Begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Weekend pass $20.00 or $10 per day per person. Michigan State University Livestock Pavilion, 4301 Farm Lane, East Lansing, MI 49923. Beginning on Friday, January 2 and running through Sunday, January 4, horse lovers can experience a unique blending of two horse disciplines, as professional horsemen, Brandt Clark and Phil Oakes bridge the gap between Western and English riding. These two horsemen met at a clinic years ago and formed a fast friendship, although they have chosen two different riding styles. At the clinic, both were faced with “green” (untrained) horses and found their styles were compatible. That friendship brought them together many times since and served as the stimulus for their “Truth Based Horsemanship” horse training philosophy. Their practical and often humorous teaching style is seriously entertaining, while extremely informative. Anyone exposed to their unique style can’t help but learn something new. Both advocate using “less to get more” from their equine companions and have found great success starting and restarting horses, working with problem horses, and helping riders become more in tune with their horses, thus becoming better horsemen and women. The “Breaking Barriers” Clinic filled quickly with green horses and horse and rider teams wanting to learn better skills for improving their riding. Brandt and his wife Adria operate Brandt Clark Professional Horse Services. Brandt is a second-generation horse trainer who started his first horse at the age of 12. Brandt specializes in starting young horses and solving problems in dressage, jumping, race, and Western horses. Brandt also holds several national and world titles in Rodeo Bull Riding and is an expert roper. Phil and Kathy Oakes own and operate the O-Bar Ranch in Gaylord, Michigan. Phil has been involved with horses for over 40 years and specializes in Western Dressage, ranch versatility, roping, and colt starting. Phil also runs a juvenile horsemanship program through Otsego County Courts, where he teaches young men and women “Truth Based Horsemanship.” Phil’s mission is to advocate for God through his life, his actions, and his horsemanship. On Friday, the program begins with the Class One featuring colt starting and horse restarting at 8 a.m. at the Michigan State Livestock Pavilion. Class two will focus on horse and rider teams working on basic ground work and awareness, problem-solving, and basic riding skills. Ending the day will be Class three where horse and rider will further explore the refinement of trust and feel that can enhance the goals or discipline of individual participants. On Saturday, the day will begin at 8 a.m. with an Open Forum for questions and answers by the pros. Classes one, two, and three will be repeated, and private lessons will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday will open with a church service from 8-9 a.m. followed by Classes three, two, and one in reverse order. Viewing admission is $10 per day or $20 for the entire weekend. All are welcome for the Open Forum to ask questions and seek answers.
