Horsing Around for Breast Cancer The weather was perfect and it was my niece’s 19th birthday. What better way to celebrate Caitlin’s coming of age by watching her and a stellar field of athletes (both human and horses) compete in Polo for the Cure yesterday?! It’s well known that each year thousands of Canadians are touched by breast cancer. It not only impacts individuals living with the disease but their families, friends and loved ones, too. In 2007, six female polo teams gathered at the Toronto Polo Club to play the first ever “Polo for the Cure” tournament. This “all women” tournament was created to raise money and awareness for a cause that touches the lives of so many. In 2013, this fun-filled weekend was more than just polo—as attendees, we were treated to boutiques, a dressage demonstration, a Pink Pony Parade for children (which featured my youngest), delicious food and drinks, a silent auction, and more entertainment. The weekend was hugely successful and it is just the beginning of what is sure to be a hallmark annual polo event put on by the women of polo. This year marked the sixth annual Polo for the Cure, an event that has raised over $60,000. VanDuzer Painting was a sponsor, as well as Upton Grey, the stables Caitlin trains at. While I can hardly say I know the finer points of the game, it was a wonderful way to raise money and a raise a toast to a fine young woman. Happy Birthday, Caitlin!
