Hostility... June 25 Hostility… For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot . (Romans 8:7) “Those who submit like a child do it because they know that the Father wants only the happiness of His children and that only He knows the way. That is the testimony we must have” —Henry B. Eyring Even the novice trekker quickly realizes His ways are not our ways and that never more evident than when attempting to create a mindset by which to set a course for life. More to the point, the renewed mind clearly comprehends that a course change is called for, mandating comprehensive changes in even the mundane of life. And so the struggle to change course begins, a battle royal is about to unfold. The flesh, polluted by the infection of sin, is a hostile and formidable foe, even for a mind set on the Law of the Spirit. But the flesh has no intention of changing course without a grand and painful struggle. The flesh has encountered wishful thinking before, regarding a grand buffet of ideas, from weight-loss, exercise, etc…, merely ignoring the thought of the day, knowing the mind will return home in the very near future. Tragically, the mind of the trekker does indeed return to the ways of the flesh without much delay. Novices trekkers are ill-prepared for the necessary battles required to change course. So it comes as no surprise the flesh is radically empowered once the mind returns to set on the ways of the flesh. And with its old partner back in tow, the flesh’s hostility toward the ways of God finds expression in a refusal to submit to the ways of God. The inner being languishes as the hostile flesh reigns in the day-to-day decisions of life. But the Spirit does not feint in the midst of rebellion, continuing to whisper the wisdom of God’s ways into the life of the novice trekker. And the child, the novice trekker, soon discovers the truth of the flesh, its intent to destroy and maim. Only the Father truly delights in the happiness of the child. And so the mind returns to the ways of the Spirit…
