Hot light You will need an incandescent light bulb (the old type with a filament), a mug one-third full of water, and a microwave oven. Put the light bulb in the mug so the water covers the metal end. Place the mug and light bulb in the microwave oven, turn on, and sit back to watch the light show. Normally in these light bulbs electricity flows through the filament heating it, and the hot filament emits light. In this case the microwaves heat the filament directly, and the hot filament gives off light. For reasons of the wavelength of microwaves some parts of the oven are heated more than others,(which is why food is put onto a rotating platter to heat all the parts of the food evenly). Which is why the light bulb shines brighter in some parts of its rotation around the oven than others. How do we know this is the correct explanation? Because it works just as well with a light bulb in which the filament is broken, preventing any electricity from flowing. Enjoy.
