House and Garden magazine went into great detail on the statuary - TopicsExpress

House and Garden magazine went into great detail on the statuary that is located in the Hewitts Italian Sunken Garden. One thing that stood out was the number of statues the Hewitts copied from the gardens in Versailles, France. One statue that is located on the pond directly across from the Glass Piazza is a Triton statue made of lead blowing a conch shell. The next statues are found guarding the steps leading to the oval fountain. There are eight sphinxes depicting the likeness of Madame DuBarry and Madame de Pompadour, the two mistresses of King Louis the XV, who are considered to be cultural icons and trend setters in France during the 1700s.
