How Good Are Your Life’s Photographs? Most smartphones have the ability to take pictures that produce better quality photos than the new digital camera that you so eagerly unwrapped only a few years ago. However, if your camera’s lens is smudged or dirty, the picture quality will suffer no matter how amazing the camera is. Not long ago, I remember snapping a breathtaking view, and to my surprise, the picture was completely black except for a blob of white on the edge of the photo. The lighting was great and the backdrop was worthy of remembering, but my finger was covering the lens! Nothing that I did could improve the quality of my photo until I removed my finger. What we take away with us each day is similar to how a camera functions. Everything we see comes through the filter of our internal lens, and if we are hurting physically, emotionally, or spiritually, our lens becomes smudged. No matter how appealing the landscape may be, every snapshot we take of our life that day will yield a disappointing result. When we cling to an unhealthy or unrealistic perception about life, we often pull away in depression, which begins to slowly eliminate the light to our internal lens. As a result, the picture we have at the end of the day is a dark memory. To make our day’s picture better—and hopefully wonderful—we don’t always have to change the light, but merely need to let more light in by tearing down the walls that fear and distrust have built over time. Our lenses determine how we perceive life, and they can become dirty from unforgiveness, abuse, or failing to rest and reflect. We could have a smudged view because we need vitamins, help with a medical condition, wise counsel in spiritual matters, or just a change of pace. Take some time today to wipe away the smudges on your lens and let God shine more light into an otherwise dim setting so you can clearly see the beauty abounding in your life’s picture. How is the quality of your pictures today? The sun is shining, and there are beautiful people and wonderful food. Search for help and you will acquire hope, because with God all things are possible. “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.” Matthew 6:22 (NASB)
