How Hyderabad Became Rich? Hyderabad is a 450-year old city. The city is noted for its culture, cuisines and the royalty. A multitude of influences has shaped the character of Hyderabad. Hyderabad was founded in A.D.1590--91 and built by Muhammad Quli, the fifth king of the Qutubshahi dynasty. If Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah was the founder of Hyderabad City, Osman Ali Khan, the Nizam VII, can be called as the maker of modern Hyderabad, in a variety of ways. During the period of Nizam rule (a former monarchy of the Hyderabad City) Hyderabad State became the richest. The Nizam was known for his huge wealth and jewelry collection, he had been the richest man in the world until the end of his reign. The rule of the Nizams’ brought cultural and economic growth for the city. Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan was the fifth richest man ever, with an estimated worth of us$210.8 billion. Myth behind its Riches!! It is said that the exceptional prosperity enjoyed by Hyderabad during Qutub Shahi times was due to the fact that Goddess Lakshmi, pleased with kind hearted king and founder of the city, Mohammad Quli, had chosen it as her abode. One moonless night, she decided to leave the city as she knew that the Qutub Shahi dynasty was coming to an end in the near future. The guard at the exit of the city gate was astounded when a beautiful lady, dressed in royal attire with jewelry, demanding that the gate be opened for her. When the sentry, quite taken with her, asked her name, she replied, “I am Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth”. For future well-being of Hyderabad, the guard begged her not to do so. But she was adamant and not willing to stay. He made her promise to wait there until he returned after informing the king of her request. Then he departed. When he was out of sight, he killed himself for the benefit of his beloved city. True to her vow, Lakshmi waited and is still waiting for the guard to return. The Goddess and the wealth of Hyderabad remained firmly within city limits from then on.
