How I Feel/Social Issues pt 1: EDUCATION First and foremost, the educational system in the United States is broken and obsolete. The concept of educating our citizens has become too political. Education should not equate a dollar amount. Education is a commodity that anyone should be able to obtain. It is counterproductive for a person to reach the highest level of formal education and be over their eyeballs in debt. It is counterproductive for employers to require a fifty thousand dollar Masters Degree and only willing to pay twenty-five thousand dollars. It is counterproductive for one college course book to cost more than a working students earnings in a two week period. An adequate education is priceless and its benefits cannot be measured in dollars or cents. To deny one a decent education due to the lack of funding is detrimental and ultimately, social suicide. As a nation, it is our obligation to ensure that every generation is equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to maintain this nations prestige. Right now, this country is engaged in psychological warfare and it is losing horrifically. Instead of our children progressing, they are regressing. Compared to the youth of twenty years ago, they are roughly 10 paces behind in mathematics, science, engineering and even basic reading. Ask any school aged child to name the president who stated Speak softly and carry a big stick the most likeliest response will be wait, let me google it. Ask that same child what their favorite video game is and they will respond with the title, main characters, the console, the number of levels and the object of the game. In an effort to be a diverse free thinking society, we are losing the basics. As parents, we have to engage our children in more meaningful and productive activities. It is not enough to send a child to a classroom or set them in front of a television set. Education is not confined to the walls of a facility designated to educate. Education begins at birth and continues throughout a lifetime. If we wish to remain a world superpower, we have to remove the price tag from our educational system.
