How I Met My Husband... (since its our anniversary today) ~Tl;Dr - TopicsExpress

How I Met My Husband... (since its our anniversary today) ~Tl;Dr version: It was destiny. Really.~ Twenty years ago, I applied to the student foreign exchange program through the University of Tennessee to study at The University of Manchester. At the same time, I began looking at possible summer jobs. I found an advertisement for a counselor position at a camp in Massachusetts and thought that might be interesting. So I applied for that, too. Both opportunities required much paperwork, references, etc., (and this was pre-internet days), so it was a drawn-out process. (Please understand that my dislike of both the great outdoors and other peoples children dates back to my teens, so why I thought Camp Counselor was a good idea is beyond me.) Thankfully, I was accepted into the exchange program. Knowing that Id need to make as much money as possible to finance this trip, I wrote to the camp and told them I was was withdrawing my application. I spent the summer waiting tables instead. I got my first choice of University, but my third choice of dormitory, so I wasnt real thrilled with that, but ENGLAND! I picked up every shift I could at the restaurant and packed my bags. So, now its September, and Im in England (!) meeting my fellow dormitory residents. One is a really cute Scottish guy. I was primed for this moment by an adolescence of reading Scottish historical romances, so YAY! He seems interested in me. Yay, again! However, this cute Scot has a really good tan. As youre probably aware, Scotland (and the UK in general) is not known for its balmy climate and tanning opportunities, so I ask where he spent his summer to get that tan. He spent the summer teaching sailing at a camp in Massachusetts. Yep. Had I not been accepted into the exchange program (and placed in my third choice dormitory), Id have met my Geek at a summer camp in Massachusetts. This is the kind of story I couldnt write into a book without it sounding completely cliched and clunky. But its true. I kind of have to believe in destiny now. And thats how I met my husband.
