How To Win Life’s Battles “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, ‘Are You for us or for our adversaries?’ So He said, ‘No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.’” – Joshua 5:13-14 Here Joshua is on the eve of the biggest battle of his life. In front of him stood the city of Jericho, guarding the entrance into the Promised Land. And the city had to be overcome. Joshua had his doubts, fears, worries and anxieties. He was worried about the reports of his advisers about the strength of his opponents and how formidable the walls of Jericho were. He had no battering rams, no catapults, no moving towers. Only slings, swords, spears, arrows and trumpets. Standing there, Joshua lifted up his eyes and suddenly saw a Man – the Son of God – with His sword drawn in His hand, ready to fight for Joshua. But Joshua was so intense, he said to Him, “Are you for me, or against me?” The Son of God said, “Neither! I am not for you, I am not for Jericho, I am for God!” And immediately Joshua fell on his face and worshipped. “Then the Commander of the LORD’s army said to Joshua, ‘Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.’ And Joshua did so.” – Joshua 5:15 Now, shoes are a symbol of activity, intensity, momentum, action. So God was saying to Joshua, “Take them off. Slow down, and just trust me. Be still and know that I am God. Trust me to fight life’s battles for you!” Joshua was all ready to go, but that night he learned to let go and let God. Friend, no matter what challenges you are facing today, no matter how ready you are to do something about it, just slow down, love God, worship Him, and commit your battle to Him. For “the battle is the LORD’s” (1 Samuel 17:47). Prayer for the day: Commit your fears, worries and battles to the Lord. Worship Him, and trust that He will guide you through to victory.
