How do I make it in the music business? Im asked this question - TopicsExpress

How do I make it in the music business? Im asked this question almost every day and my answer is always the same: there is no formula. I approached it as if I was getting ready to go to battle. (1) Observe your surroundings. Learn the mechanics and fundamentals and how the music business operates; who are the songwriters, publishers, whos ASCAP BMI-SESAC, what is a record label & what does each person do on the inside, when do I hire a personal manager; personal business manager; music business attorney & what does a booking agent do etc. (2) Plan your attack: you never run out in the middle of a battlefield firing randomly. In other words, you dont come to Nashville and showcase yourself right away; youll get slaughtered. Your chain is as strong as your weakest link. Your songwriting may be decent, a #5 but your guitar playing is below amateur, a #1 and your singing is a #4 but not as pretty as your image which is a #6. You have to get everything up to your highest number, a #6. When everything looks even, youll appear to be a #10. Stay out of the way until youre ready. So many people make the mistake of overexposing themselves thinking they need to network and audition for every single important person in town as soon as they meet them. Then they sing for these people and leave an everlasting impression. The executive walks away saying man their guitar playing sucked (your weakest link) & there went your shot because theyll remember you 20 years later and how bad you sucked. (3) Execution: when you look like a #10, youll be confident and ready; lean and mean! Then you set up your meeting with the record label, walk in and deliver an undeniable performance. Nashville does not walk away from money, period! They dont make money on weakest links. They make money on those who appear to be a #10. My answer may not work for everyone. Its the model I used and what worked for me. Granted theres many other routes to take such as TV and I would recommend that 100%. Remember theres no formula so anyway you can get in, get in.
