How do write a story with Diverse characters in you story. PART 1 Ok lets say you got inspired to write a story in similar vein as X-men, Justice League or something less grand and simple. But here’s a few flaws that most stories tend to fall and thus the characters and the story suffer for it. Now if you are focusing on a character then this is not for you. Now there is nothing wrong with having said character a white male, but sometimes it can be like the same tired troupe that’s been played since the era of television. So It’s not bad when you make a character that is different from you. In fact it can be fun and a bit challenging. It can be fun because of the fact that you want to make your character different and you are willing make him or her unique. Now you might say that it works on tv and movies. True, but sometimes it mostly the actors the make the character if they are good enough. Take Captian Ben Sisko, it was mostly Avery Brooks that helped developed the character. On paper its’s different it’s just you or unless you are working with a partner (which is best and I will explain why). So you have this character that is POC (PERSON OF COLOUR), you have this good idea for this character, but sometimes we can stereotype the character without knowing it. It kinda happens that way when we don’t do proper research. I’m not saying to read up on Black History month, but maybe look at other mediums. Now although you got the characters race, don’t make it all of his character. Like take the Movie Crimson Tide, Denzel’s Washington’s character was black, but it wasn’t the focal point of the movie. Although it’s not a point to you or the story, it is to the audience. If the audience sees that that the character is not handled right then you have a problem. Saddly the beginning years of media in this country, people of color are either mocked or just erased. Mind you it wasn’t that long ago and some people still practice it. So your audience might be taken aback if you mess up. Another way to make a good character is to go outside and see the world. Yeah, yeah but it helps. Like the world is far diverse than what you see, read and play. So just take a walk outside and just watch people….not too much now unless you want to get locked up. Part II will discuss on other characters and how to make diverse and 3-dimensional.
