How do you get to Carnegie Hall? It turns out performing with the Lions Gate Sinfonia is just one of the stops along the way. On Sunday, January 26 five up-and-coming pianists make their Lions Gate Sinfonia debuts less a month before they arrive at Carnegie for the first time. (Music and Fashion: Signs of the Times, Sunday January 26 at 3:00pm; tickets available through the Centennial Theatre box office: 604 984 4484) Pianists Angela Hu, Brandon Jong, Ryan Zhu, Jasper Liang and Jasper Yoo cleaned up at the Crescendo International Piano Competition, held in December at Vancouver’s Tom Lee Music, by capturing five First Place awards. The prize packages could hardly be more exciting, offering debut appearances at possibly the world’s most famous concert hall, Carnegie Hall in New York City. These award-winning performers are all students of Donna Fishwick and members of the Donna Fishwick Piano Ensemble. Three of these young pianists will be awarded Gold Medals at the Royal Conservatory of Musics Convocation Ceremony later this year at the Chan Centre. These medals are given to students who have achieved the highest marks in British Columbia for their piano examination grade this past year. “I cannot believe our great luck”, says Maestro Clyde Mitchell. “When we chose these five young musicians, I knew they were wonderfully talented, but I had no idea that all five would be on their way to Carnegie Hall. What a talent powerhouse!” Board chair Chris Pettypiece could not agree more. “What a privilege to hear five young musicians just before they make their Carnegie Hall debut.” The five pianists will each perform a movement from five piano concertos by Haydn, Beethoven, Grieg and Rachmaninoff. The program also includes Leonard Bernstein’s ever popular and fantastically energizing West Side Story. Adding style to the January 26 performance will be a unique showcase of fashions from 1750 to 1950 and delightful commentary from the collection’s owner, Ivan Sayers. “It will be truly remarkable to see actual garments that were worn when Mozart, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff were writing their music. We will experience the music in an entirely new way,” says Mitchell.
