How do you properly dispose of household hazardous waste? It may - TopicsExpress

How do you properly dispose of household hazardous waste? It may be a question that many who are embarking on a permanent change of station may be asking. On May 31, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will offer a one-day household hazardous waste collection at the Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery in Wood River, Illinois, about a twenty minute drive from the base. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will accept harsh chemical cleaners, thinners, antifreeze, weed killers, insecticides, pesticides and similar hazardous household products. Unfortunately, they will not accept explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and business waste. While the EPA will accept motor oil, they recommend that you take your used oil to local recyclers such as Walmart, Auto Zone, and Advance Auto Parts. They won’t take lead-acid batteries but retailers such as Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts will accept them. Another common waste that they will not accept is latex paint since it does not contain hazardous constituents. To dispose of small amounts of latex paint, allow the paint to dry in the can and then throw it in the trash. For larger amounts mix an absorbent such as kitty litter, sawdust, or shredded paper with the paint and allow it to desiccate. Once the paint is dry it can be placed in your household garbage.
