How does one describe waking up over a sea of swirling clouds at an altitude of 4,700m, unzipping your tent and realizing that you are as close to any idea of a heaven as you will ever be? How does one describe the feeling of complete hopelessness in the cold grips of the worst kind of fear, or the feeling of being pulled back from the edge of death by the soothing voice of a friend appearing out of an ice storm? How does one describe the inner strength it takes to conquer themselves? If I had to describe the otherworldly beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro, the extraordinary nature of its people or the immensity of the struggle of climbing it, I would spend the rest of my life trying to find the right words. Instead, Id like to share a few images Ive taken throughout my climb. In this inhospitable world of rocks, wind and clouds, one gets a rare opportunity to discover hidden parts of their own heart they didnt know existed. I can only hope that these images will help preserve the memory of what was the most difficult and spiritual experience of my life. I summited to Uhuru Peak (“Freedom” in Swahili) at 7:40 in the morning on June 13th, 2014, eleven days before my 30th birthday. It is my absolute pleasure to share these photos with You!
