How gullible are we? The recent pronouncement by the Leader of the Opposition, Arnhim Eustace, that an Associate Degree obtained from the Community College is “not worth the paper it is written on” has allowed me to take stock and give some thoughts as to the mindset of many in our country. The Leader of the Opposition spoke. Everyone listed and every word uttered was accepted. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Nicole Bonadie-Baker then fired off a mail to the University of the West Indies to; again, get clarification to place in the public domain. Everyone read the response the UWI Professor made to Bonadie-Baker’s letter, and then the subject matter changed to: how come it is only now they are seeking such clarification? Nicole spoke and said she cannot speak for the University of the West Indies, hence her letter. Everyone listened but few accepted what she said. Deputy Director of the College, Nigel Scott, made the rounds on radio and television and spoke. Everyone listed but, again, very few accepted what he said. Comrade got into the mix and give a whole chapter and verse on the matter, even making the point that when Leacock, Patel and a very large number of Vincentians went to UWI, it was not accredited. Everyone listened but not many accepted. The Leader of the Opposition went back on radio, along with Major and Vynnette. They spoke, with Eustace making it clear that he is sticking by his guns: the College’s Associate Degree is worthless and some students and parents are planning legal action. Everyone listened and most accepted his word. What nonsense! Are we that gullible? I am anxiously awaiting some words from the former head of the Open Campus here, Skinny.
