How many folks know we have had/have four Olympic Hockey Players from Hamden . This article does a great job of giving the history on each of them. GO TEAM USA IN SOCHI. Hamden Journal by Vicki Gemmell ◊ Aug 03, 2012 Olympic Athletes of Hamden. The town of Hamden is quite well known for its talented hockey players. To say that some of the greatest hockey players in the world have come from Hamden is not an exaggeration; this town has been the home to not one, not two, not even three, but four Olympic athletes – all hockey players. Donald Geary, who played three games in the 1948 Winter Olympics, was born in 1926 and attended Hamden High School. His performance on the HHS team was such that he was recruited to play a season with the St. Catharine’s Falcons of the Ontario Junior Hockey League in 1945 and 1946. Geary also played for the New Haven Bears in the Atlantic Hockey League for a brief period. Robert “Bob” McVey was born in Hartford in 1936 and lived in Hamden. He attended Harvard University and played on their hockey team from 1956 to 1958. By 1958, he had made the U.S. National Team, and by 1959 he was a defenseman on the U.S. Olympic Team. McVey was 23 when he brought home the U.S.’ first ever Olympic Hockey Gold Medal, a victory now known as the “Forgotten Miracle.” The U.S. went 7-0-0 and was the only team to hold Canada under four goals at the 1960 Winter Olympics. Matt Martin was born in Hamden in April 1971 and played on the Avon Old Farms team. His hockey career continued as he played for the University of Maine from 1990 to 1993. In the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, he was chosen 66th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs. When the 1994 Winter Olympics came around, Martin played defense for the U.S. Team and joined the Leafs later in the season. He played for the United States again at the 1997 World Championship. Jon Quick, Hamden’s most recent Olympic athlete, was goaltender for the U.S. Men’s Hockey Team at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he earned a silver medal. Eight years earlier, Quick was named to the 2002 New Haven Register All-Area Ice Hockey Team while playing for Hamden High. He transferred to Avon Old Farms and led them to the New England Prep Championships two years in a row, and with nine shutouts during his senior year, he holds a New England Prep Record. Quick also holds many records in UMass Amherst Hockey history, and led the Minutemen to their first NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship appearance, where he shut out Clarkson University in the first game for a 1-0 overtime victory. Currently, he plays for the LA Kings, and it was a proud moment for Hamden when Quick won his first Stanley Cup with the Kings in June 2012. Jon is now on the 2014 Olympic Team.
