How many of you remember the big eyes on the signal bridge. The signal bridge and the big eyes use to be a big attraction when we were at anchor. On my first ship, USS Prairie AD-15 we use to go out on REFTRA and then on Friday evening we would start pulling back into port in San Diego but we wouldnt pull all the way in. We would anchor in the harbor around Hotel Circle thats where all the hotel were near the mouth of the harbor and near the San Diego airport. And we would be anchor there all weekend and on Monday we would get underway and head out to sea again for part 2 of REFTRA. I use to think it was cruel....having us anchor in the harbor for the weekend....I rather have stayed out at sea. Anyways.....when we were anchored....you could look through the big eyes right into the hotel windows....and boy some of the things you saw! LOL! We had a line of Sailors waiting to get a look through the big eyes! We should charged them....we would have made a fortune! LOL!
