How many times do we need to do this? A 3,000 year old tree is not appropriate to be harvested for the timber. It is a good timber for building boats, but we now make boats from fiberglass or steel. It is a good cabinet masking timber, but most furniture is now made from particle board or less valuable (cheaper) timber, like radiata pine (plantation timber) or laminate. Huon pine oil is good for a paint additive, but these days we mostly use water based paints. Huon pine also grows very slowly, so it is not able to be replaced from planting seedlings, and their natural reproduction from seed occurs only once in five to seven years. It is not only a valuable ecological resource, but also a high value tourist attraction. These trees grow in very remote areas, usually in swampy and high rainfall areas. Loss of these trees will cause irreparable ecological damage as there is no equivalent replacement available. There are many commercially viable alternatives that can be sourced from plantations and other forests that can regenerate in 40 to 50 years. The Huon pine will take 3,000 years to regenerate to the point they are at now. To damage these trees in any way is blatant vandalism. The Huon pine forests in Tasmania should be permanently protected.
