How many video games do you have to play before you begin to imagine you have laser eyes--? And the person who cuts you off on the highway can be blown up with a simple intense glare and zap!? Poof! Their vehicle shatters in a cloud of smoke and flames, tumbling off the highway as you whiz by. The world is sliding into darkness abroad and at home. And as if the hate were not enough, just a quick scan of FB tells you enough about whats in peoples minds. Political postings are bent on dividing our country while other postings joke about punching people out for just being annoying. All around the language we are using is escalating in hate, depersonalizing people who are our friends and neighbors. When everything is pushing toward retaliation, its harder and harder to remember that revenge doesnt actually feel good... Though for some it does. I knew a person once who was so miserable they sought out situations where they could trip up others and hurt them. The suffering of others actually made this individual smile; I saw it. I wanted nothing to do with this person and I actually prayed, asking why such a terrible human had crossed my path. Imagine my surprise when I got the answer. It said: The person was there to teach me where evil comes from. Believe me, I didnt want to know! But I quickly came to see that misery makes or breaks a person, but those that it breaks are of a negative disposition. Their minds ENLARGE upon it rather than looking for logical ways out of it. They also make bad choices, avoiding the correct choice because its harder, which in turn further depresses them. This begins a downward spiral into self pity and comparison-- key traits of the negative individual. The more acutely their pain and isolation becomes the more they inch toward retaliation at an innocent bystander and the more hate becomes a steady flame in their hearts. What did I learn? That a very nice but misguided negative individual could become evil. And that evil was only a question of gradation. One slips into evil...like walking on a drizzling day... It takes quite awhile to get sopping wet. But drop by drop we are tainted. The face of evil is seldom like the cannibalistic serial killer in Silence of the Lambs. Evil walks among us, grows from within a normal person... Thats its most terrifying feature. Know thyself. If you would like to meditate with us--a growing group of individuals who would like to turn the tide towards love and hope-- please join us at 9:30 pm est for a minimum of 3 minutes. We hope that the practice will open us all to a state of greater mindfulness and compassion!
