How much is 1° worth? Last week we asked you what temperature you - TopicsExpress

How much is 1° worth? Last week we asked you what temperature you keep your #thermostat on and we got some great responses (thanks to all of you that responded). This week let’s look at what that number on your thermostat could mean to you. We’ve all heard that bumping up the temperature a few degrees in the #summer will save money but how much is the question? Is it really worth it? According to EnergyHub setting your thermostat 1° F lower in the winter saves on average 3% on your heating bill. EnergyExperts.org says that a 1° F degree increase in the summer can save you just as much! So what does that mean in the real world? Let’s say your thermostat is current set on 75° F and the portion of your monthly electric bill that goes toward cooling your home is $200. If you bumped the setpoint on your thermostat up to 77° F, that’s a potential savings of 6%. At $200 a month, you’re looking at a savings of $12 a month. That may not seem like a whole lot but it’s enough to buy you lunch and remember the savings add up over time. So on those hot summer days when you’re thinking about turning your thermostat down, think about the potential savings of leaving it right where it is or maybe even bumping it up a notch. By the way, all of this math is based on the most basic (dumb) thermostat. If you have a smart thermostat or you upgrade to one, the savings go even further.
