How much time are you wasting trying to build core strength with EXERCISE BALLS or the BOSU??? Research proves Squats and Deadlifts Build Core Muscles Better Than Exercise Balls! I always found it amusing to see how much trainers started to incorporate the exercise ball or BOSU into nearly every exercise when it first became popular. And so many still overuse these pieces of equipment performing everything from bicep curls to shoulder presses to squats and more on them. Exercises such as squats, cleans, and overhead presses activate core muscles better than isolation core exercises such as Swiss ball curl-ups is the conclusion after a review of 17 studies on core muscle activation. Multi-joint, free-weight exercises worked best for training the core muscles. Most core-strengthening programs incorporate unstable surfaces such as BOSU balls, Swiss balls and wobble boards. Instability training is less effective than whole-body exercises for building the core muscles. (Journal Strength Conditioning Research, 27: 1684-1698, 2013)
