As Jason Kasman and I reported this morning. the 27-year-old investor, who is mulling a bid against Rep. Chris Gibson, has raised more than 90 percent of the money for his potential congressional run from people who live outside the 11-county 19th District, which covers the mid-Hudson Valley and Catskills as well as parts of Rensselaer and Montgomery counties. Eldridge’s aides note that, at least in the second quarter of this year, a third of the would-be candidate’s donors lived within the district, and roughly 3/4 are from the Empire State. But New York is a big place, and that claim includes some of the wealthiest precincts of Manhattan. Indeed, Eldridge counted contributions from George Soros, the billionaire mega-donor to liberal causes and Jon Stryker, a medical device heir and outspoken gay activist. Eldridge, who is married to Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, also received checks from media luminaries connected to The Nation, Newsweek/The Daily Beast and The Atlantic as well as “Lean In” author Cheryl Sandberg, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, LGBT rights donor Tim Gill and actor Paul Rudd [correction: The Rudd in question owns Adaptive Analytics, LLC].
