How poorly informed is this then? Came to me as a Petition.org request..... The Department Of Conservation: Ban the use of 1080 poison drops jason mciver Auckland, New Zealand Sign Jasons petition 1080 is widely used to control the possum,rat and stote population in NZ forrests, the problem is that 1080 does not only kill these animals. NZ uses about 80% of the worlds 1080 supply ( in accordance to wikipedia) and is mostly dropped by helicopter which means it is easily dropped in and near water ways which then contaminates native fresh water fish and other eco systems we hold so dear in our clean, green country. This petitions main point is to encourage a ban on 1080 drops and to support alternative ideas for pest control in our country. To control one species we should target one species and not support 1080 poison drops that kill deer, native birds, native snails, wild pigs and other non targeted wild life. We have the power to make a change and in the decades of using 1080 for possum control we STILL have a possum problem, is that not answer enough? We need to catch up with the world, stop poisoning our forests and find safer alternatives for pest control! NZ has beautiful forests and 1080 is destroying what could be a lucrative fur and meat trade of deer, goat and pigs, instead these animals are poisoned causing a slow and painful death which then leads to them just rotting and not being utilised - its a sad waste and these introduced pest species could really be put to good use! Poison is not the right answer!
