How standard 2 dimensional Die Struck and Enameled lapel pins, as well as Trading Pins, are made... A laser cut die/mold is made from preprepared graphics provided by our art department. The mold is installed into a prep press/stamping machine. A sheet of metal is then fed into the machine. The sheet is stamped several times into the shape and detail of your pin. Lapel pins are usually made from from a brass and/or copper base, while trading pins are made with an iron base. The next step is to attach your preferred pin attachment/backing (the butterfly clasp or rubber clutch are standard) via a quick soldering process. At this point, it can simply be plated to be a die struck (metal only) pin. If it is to be an enameled pin, the colors are instead added now. Soft Enamel and Trading Pins are fully color injected, then are placed in a heating element at a moderately high temperature to cure the enamel and harden it. Hard Enamel pins are colored and heated one color at a time at a much higher temperature for a longer timeframe. Once coloring is completed, the pins are then plated in your specified finish and polished to perfection. Hard Enamel (Epola) pins are very polished and have a jewelry-like quality to them and the color is level with the raised metal libes of the pin. Typically, Soft Enamel and Trading pins are then coated, in a final process, with a resin based epoxy clear coat finish to protect the enamel, and give the pin depth and shine. Your pins are ready for individual packaging in either a standard miniature poly bag or optional pin box. You now have a beautiful, high quality pin that is approximately 1.2mm thick and ready to be shipped!
