How things have changed in the month since I first posted this... Crimea is now more of a focal point now as opposed to Kiev, in part because of the large contingent of Russian Naval Forces stationed at Sevastopol, and in part because despite being a part of Ukraine, the majority of the population of the Crimean Peninsula self-identify as Russian speakers and long for closer ties with Moscow, while the minority population self-identifies as Ukrainian speaking and longs for closer ties with the EU. A minority are Crimean Tartars, maybe 10-20% in Crimea, and their ancestry is Turkic. I suspect that things in the region will get worse before they get better.
