How to Shoot Dog Shows Part 10 As my friends may know, our photos are out from a weekend, in general, between 30 hours (some electronic) and 80 hours (final hard copies)...One aspect to this is that sometimes we get letters like the following: Hi Warren, Just saw these pictures on FB that you posted from this last weekends show and then saw the same photo’s (well kinda the same photo’s) that have been rather enhanced. I am just curious what your take is on this? is is an OK thing for the owner or ad designer(same person in this case) to change the photo? Just seems so wrong when it is actually changing the structural appearance of the dog and your photo. This is my answer: For a variety of reasons, the photo that goes on FB is not always the image chosen for final edit. Once an electronic image is purchased, beyond Copyright restrictions, I am unable to control final use of the photo, or what an ad designer may elect to show in their capacity. While I would like the photos to be unedited, it is unlikely in this day of wanna - be experts at Photoshop, that will happen. I would prefer to breed a better dog than hire someone to misdirect the eye. I am certain that Hoodini would have liked what he performed to be real magic, but it, too, was not. This is, of course, not an answer to the implied question, but perhaps it would be fun ( as in reasonable, honest, in the best interest of the sport} to be able to advertise UNRETOUCHED PHOTO and have it be THE TRUTH. There are no variations on the Truth -- It is or it is not. While purists may claim that cropping alters the image, or flash does, or dodging and burning does, we proceed down a slippery slope, to whit: I am told that at one National Specialty, the Judges are told to stand in place with differently - colored ribbons after which the dog and hander are taken at some later time and the two are added together. I have been asked to add a Judge to a photo where, when I looked up the schedule, I found that the Judge had not Judged that dog-- this from a Professional Handler. What is next is the effort to combine a Judge and a dog with a caption of, ...This is what my photo of my dog would look like if you put me up next weekend. or ...My dog lost last weekend, but dont you think this would have been nice? The myth that when a photo is taken, the person who is photographed has part of their soul taken -- NOT SO. When a photograph is taken, a portion of the photographers soul goes into it, and any alteration steals even more soul. I am running low on soul after all these years. Stop it!
