How to Survive in South America. Advice Number Six. By El Gringo. Dogs! There are thousands of dogs in South America, on the highways, the byways and on the streets. Potentially very dangerous, - rabid, wild, hungry, mean, aggressive and unpredictable, the current advice is to stay your distance and never, ever, attempt to touch them. This advice is clearly outdated. Most of the dogs are friendly and docile, and if not spending lazy afternoons asleep on the pavements and roadside verges, are just going about their doggy business looking for their supper. Occasionally, a dog may leap from its slumbers and chase after the Tiger, running alongside the front wheel, barking, but this was only to check if the bike really had three cylinders, and the barking was to enquire on the capacity of the engine. Before traveling to South America, and five years before that to India, I had Anti - Rabies Vaccinations, the only result being lighter in the pocket and reduced slobbering, but I was still barking. Pointless, besides, I liked slobbering. So, when in South America and you see a mean looking dog, give it a cuddle.
