How to help your garden withstand dry spells: * Lay gravel paths (Instead of concrete) so rain is absorbed into the garden and doesnt run off. * Reuse your bath water by mixing it with liquid fertiliser. * Place pebbles around potted plants and in the garden to help soil retain moisture. (An alternative to mulch) * Plant a tree to shade the garden; this helps stop soil from drying out and also cools the house down, saving on electricity. * Use water storage crystals in pots and granules in the garden.. * Use a soil wetter. (Apply this over winter months as well.) * Create your own compost. * Start a worm farm.(For the worm juice) * Use a seaweed solution every month. (Seasol) * Never leave the soil bare – always mulch to prevent weeds as they use valuable water. * Plant a ground cover to protect the soil. * Plant and water during the coolest part of the day – early morning or evening. * Select drought-tolerant species such as Australian Natives. * Reduce lawn area. * Mow less frequently. The longer the grass, the slower it will dry out. * Avoid having grass compete for nutrients and water around the trunks of trees and shrubs. * Mulch after rain to maximise water retention and inhibit weed growth. * Collect fallen leaves to use as mulch. (Not Eucalyptus leaves) * Avoid using mulch mats or newspaper as they will stop water from penetrating into the soil. * Seaweed is a great mulch as it feeds the garden at the same time. * Sugarcane on slopes prevents erosion. * Top up your mulch at least once a year. * Leave lawn clippings on the lawn after mowing; this puts nutrients back into the lawn.
