How to lie with science and statistics, lesson one: Headline: Eating red meat makes you 30% more likely to get cancer Reality: Eating large quantities of red meat (5.5 cooked ounces or more per day every single day) shows a strong correlation to an increase in the risk of colorectal cancer over a 40 year period... From a 1.3% chance to a 1.7% chance. The lie here is in using deliberate confusion between an increase and an absolute. People hear 30% and think 1 in 3 chance. Moving from .001 to .002 is a 100% increase... but its still just .002. ... and that doesnt even get into correlation does not equal causation and uncontrolled variable analysis.
