How to satisfy the South-West This has been a Gordian knot for all the regimes at the centre since the first republic, so not unexpectedly GEJ’s turn to answer the question came very early in his presidency. Having tried unsuccessfully with the South-West intelligentsia and the Lagos-Ibadan press, GEJ tried a populist approach by renaming UNILAG after Chief MKO Abiola. But the insatiable West raised hell over MAULAG. Tired of the hard-to-please South-West, GEJ tried to buy political patronage from the North and in the process score a coup-de-grace against the wild wild West; the president released Major Hamza al-Mustapha who had been sentenced to death over the killing of Mrs Kudirat Abiola. This too did not go down with the West, so the president’s self-acclaimed “attack dog” wrote a stinker to the Yoruba political leadership asking them what they really wanted from GEJ. “When Mr President decided to immortalize Chief MKO Abiola, whom you all hail as the symbol of democracy, you almost set the West ablaze with your protests. And when Mr President released Major al-Mustapha, you still protested. Your actions smack of hypocrisy and dishonesty; so we ask you: ki le fe gaan? ” The spokesman for Afenifere took up the gauntlet. “In Yoruba land, it is only a bastard child that points to its father’s compound with the left hand. That settled, tell your boss to disband PDP. ”
