How vital is it to take rest?? It is a good habit if you are taking a break of 10-15 minutes after each 40-50 minutes of studies. It is a fallacy that more hours of studies= more marks in the exams. You should try to stretch your 15 minutes to 20 then 25 then 30 upto 40 minutes. Human learning is a very complex process and each one of us has a unique way of learning which suits us best. We are not robots who are standardised to perform in an expected manner. Our body is the best judge provided we listen to the signals like fatigue, pain, pleasure etc. received from it. You fell that your need to take a break after every 15 minutes is hampering your progress. I think it is more to do with your anxieties and guilt which diminish your potential. In your case perhaps 30 minutes might be the optimum. If you find that you do need to take a break after 15 minutes then reduce the break to less than 5 minutes. Remember your self confidence and belief in yourself is more important than the absolute number of hours of studies. In short it is quality and not the quantity which matter. Human cognitive processes work at two levels. There is a short term memory which is like RAM. After 40-50 minutes of studies this human RAM is full. If you continue studying beyond this you dont gain anything at all. On the contrary you are loosing what you had learnt in the initial moments. It is stack overflow kind of phenomenon but more complex. How does a rest of 10-15 minutes help? Your learning is transferred from short term memory, RAM to your long term memory. Besides, it is processed and interconnections with already learnt concepts are formed. There was the Aamir in Ghajini who could not manage this part and you can easily appreciate how important is the transfer from short term to long term memory.
