How was this crazy project produced? Lightwaves was shot on the Red Epic, a 5k camera capable of immense resolution and high framerates. Director of Photography Scott Kassenoff utilized custom-built Hydroflex underwater housings to get below the surface and capture the action below, where the effect of the LED board was particularly pronounced and surreal. Zeiss Superspeed lenses were used to maximize apertures and capture as much light as possible. This creates great difficulties in consistently focusing shots, so many times we would have the athletes perform the same action up to 10 times in a row to make sure focus was achieved.
