How would you decide in the situation of Hannes? Florian: What I - TopicsExpress

How would you decide in the situation of Hannes? Florian: What I can say is that I understand the religious position with the point of life being good given, a gift, and therefore humans are not free to decide this by themselves, but I also have conflicting feelings towards people who are hopeless and are jumping in front of trains e.g., that is also horrible, so it is questionable to why not have this certain possibility. I also understand the fears coming along with the point of it being exploited or the nurturing of the impression that humans are not welcome or wanted as they are. But looking at the countries where it has been allowed, I dont think it was exploited (not sure if that covers statistics). Most of all, it is a very difficult and individual topic I guess. I was able to really relate to that conflict and problem through the character, but I cannot say what I would do myself, since I am not involved in such situation myself (in real life). Does that mean you created a certain distance in order to be able to play that part, or what was your approach to acting this? Florian: No, contrary, I had to engage into the subject matter to play it and as the situation was so strong in itself, none of the actors was able to remove from it anyway. But if we did, it wouldnt have been authentic; it would not have worked for an audience. Lots of interesting questions arise among the lines and pictures, like: Is it ok for Hannes, because he still can walk properly or does one have to stick to an iron lung to be free to end his life, or the question if life is better per se, just by being extended. Those are value questions to think about. It is a tightrope walk, and perhaps people, like me too, will hesitate to confront themselves with such topics and therefore rather be undecided whether to see the film, but I always was glad I did it in the end. So we cannot omit to mention that someone will die in this film, but one will also see and remark the true meaning of life as well and of course there is alwalys a very comforting message then for all of us. Additionally it grounds you when you remind yourself of life being finite, thats the healthy side to it. What does the word star mean to you and do you enjoy being famous? Florian: I think everyone of us enjoys positive attention, i’ll be the peak of vanity to deny that, but perhaps the wish to have a certain balance in this is also true. Most of all for not creating the expectation in myself to never be something else than famous (to not depend on it). I like the fans to watch the films and be inspired through them, but in order to live a healthy and normal life; I also prevent myself from potential negative sides to it. I don’t want it to go over my head. What were your expectations regarding your profession? Florian: Well, I graduated in the US and there I’ve been told to have no expectations at all, to not be able to ever make a living from this profession, so my expectations weren’t high, that tooth is pulled quite quickly. But of course as a child, I pictured myself with the greatest parts and characters; I pictured it to be great. The moment you succeed it is very concrete and nice though, eventhough you still have problems, they are different now, but I learned that regardless of position or status, that chain will continue until you lay your head to rest. So perhaps I should learn to calibrate my attitudes towards problems or difficulties rather then believing them to end. It is more important how you handle those things with good attitudes than the position itself. Maturing. How does that influence your acting? Florian: It is actually the best part, the more you mature, the more you are competent in acting, because you have more experience. 10 years ago, I hadn’t been able to play this character e.g., especially because showing emotions or even crying in front of cameras has been a longtime challenge for me. Probably because I didn’t do it in real life either. But now, the profession also changes you, and maturing means that sometimes you cannot even remove from emotional situations that easy anymore, that’s just the way it is now, even when I wanted to, strong situations drag me in, because I experienced more, and that is just fine.
