How you can ask for -- and receive -- cosmic guidance Here’s what I’ve learned about asking Life for guidance: 1. Ask with your whole heart and as much of a sense of deserving as you can Pray to whomever you pray to. God, nature, your Aunt on the other side, angels, your totem animal, the universal intelligence, the great mystery, your true nature. And believe that those forces are not only waiting for your call, but they exist to assist, support, guide and cheer you on. Your needs are the vocation of angels. 2. Pay attention to your persistent thoughts Guidance doesn’t have to come as a lightning strike or as a white dove on your fire escape, looking you in the eye. Guidance can be (and I think it usually is), those notions that you can’t get out of your mind. Persistent wonderings, recurring names, places, things — gentle heart cues. 3. Learn to relax Sometimes I’ll pray to know the answer to something by the end of the day. “Life! Show me the way by Midnight PST!” This is a pretty unreliable method, actually. Usually I get my answers when I’m more chill about it all. The less frantic you are about “knowing,” the more space you leave for the answers to slip into your consciousness. Admittedly, this is hard to do. But if you concentrate on relaxing into the present, you will be rewarded with some peace of mind. NOTE: Gratitude is an astoundingly reliable and immediate way of being in the present. 4. Take care of yourself so you are more able to receive When I take care of myself — sleep, movement, space for not-doingness — then I’m better able to hear and see which way to go. You can’t be tuned in if your head and body are static with fatigue and stress. 5. Identify your pattern of divine communique It took me years to figure out that I get very reliable downloads in the morning as I’m waking up. I used to categorize my morning thoughts as “just fuzzy morning thoughts.” But when I started acting on my rise n’ shine 4-1-1, I realized that whether I liked the guidance or not, I was getting incredibly useful notes from the cosmos. I also often wake up with songs in my head. And it’s not because I just downloaded something from iTunes the night before. I finally clued into the fact that the songs I heard in the morning were letting me know what was going on inside of me. I’m convinced that I have a spirit guide that is also my Cosmic DJ. Recent wake up tunes: (And yep – clearly there’s a theme here. But don’t over-analyze me, okay?) Slowburning by Jamie Woon Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams & T.I. Sweet Surrender by Sarah McLachlan Cross that Line by Joshua Radin Once you’ve identified your own pattern of divine communique — journaling, a hot shower, running — you can start listening more attentively. A note on dreams: For years, I’ve been debating with people — shrinks and woo-woo types — about the veracity of dreams. Mythical? Subconscious messaging? Astral plugin? Here’s what’s true for me: Dreams can bring messages to me. Those are magically powerful dreams — shamanic in their quality — and they impress deep knowing upon my whole being. But these aren’t frequent. They are like birthday gifts and seasonal surprises. I’ve always felt that my dream time was when I took out my psychic garbage. Mostly, I work out a lot of unsettled crap in the dream state. There’s a direct correlation between my day-time introspection and the frequency of my dreams. The more I process my thoughts and emotions during the day — whether that’s a bike ride, a cry, a meditation, a great connection — the less I dream at night — and the more rested I am when I wake up. It’s important not to confuse dreaming with where you go when you sleep. Those are different states altogether. 6. Ground & Protect Yourself There will be times when you ask for guidance and you’ll get some weird stuff back. It will feel “off” or “dark.” Low vibration stuff can slip into your head space, just like a creepy guy can slip into your favourite pub. You don’t want that stuff in your space, so you need to put up some barriers or ask it to leave. Before I ask for guidance, I request, actually, I command that, “Any and all negative and low vibration energy return to its God source.” And the quality of my thoughts and messages is golden from there forward. You don’t want to create combative energy with the negative thoughts or vibes that you notice — that just keeps you hooked. Bless and command. 7. Keep asking The cosmos is standing by 24/7. Be needy if you need to be. Holler. Whisper. Don’t let up. Get up and ask for guidance tomorrow and for all tomorrows. 8. Trust Learn by trusting. Adjust your antennae as you go. Leave room for mystery. (Go to DanielleLaPorte to share & get more: bit.ly/16GuEyu)
