Howdy Folks, Here is another fun fact about our beautiful coast. When it comes to the mystical Glass Sponge reefs, British Columbias Hecate Strait has the only sizable reefs in all the worlds oceans (of what we have discovered thus far). These beautiful Glass Sponge reefs have been calculated by scientist to have started roughly 9000 years ago!(gee-golly) Discovered in the 1980s, these reefs are not only historical relics but also homes and safe havens for plenty of marine life along our northern coast. Sponges are very interesting animals, thats right folks, animals. They are the worlds oldest multi-cell organisms. They don’t have lungs or mouths. Instead, sponges pump water through their bodies to breathe, feed and remove waste. Attaching them selves to rocks and each other, they manage to create giant reefs. In some cases these reefs manage to get 8 stories high!! So the next time youre on the ferry or looking in the ocean, remember the ocean is our to respect, not trash. Cheers, Tim
