Howdy Yall. Joe here (and for the next two weeks). Sorry for the lack of posts. Apparently, the post I wrote the other day did not stick! Anyway, Week 6 has started off pretty slow: 3 nests Saturday, 1 nest Sunday, 0 on Monday and 1 last night. It pains me to say it, but I think we are finally having our long-overdue low year. We have less than half as many nests as we had at this time last year and a third less compared to 2012. But ... Do not fear everyone! This is how sea turtle nesting populations work. Even in a growing population, there are suppose to be fluctuations. Because individual turtles do not nest every year (more like every three years), there are bound to be years where fewer turtles migrate to breed. This why our 40+ year project is so important: only long-term monitoring can capture true patterns in sea turtle populations. Our population is doing great ... its just taking a little foraging break to recover from last years amazing season. Alternatively, were about to get SLAMMED!!!
