Howdy everyone just wanted to give everyone an update on my well-being. I have been hospitalized for the past month. I have now been home for the past two weeks but have been very weak and tired. I guess I should begin with on September 15, 1992, my life changed forever. During that day the good Lord was watching over me and spared my life not once but twice that evening. At that time I supervised road crews that installed the road signs that you see on roads but I also installed the road striping that you drive by on the highway. During that night I was finishing up a left turn lane on a major highway located in Pinellas County, Florida. The lane was closed off so that we could mark the spots where we would come back through and spray the lines in with a truck. While I was marking the road a car came through the closure and struck me while I was walking and marking the road, my back was to the on-coming vehicle. The vehicle struck me traveling approximately 55-60MPH according to the police report. As a result of the collision my right leg was actually partially severed in which I lost four inches in leg length. The right leg had many breaks in the bone and an external fixator was placed to hold the bones in place. The right leg also sustained skin and muscle loss along with a large hemotoma. The right leg endeared several skin grafts as well as a muscle graft that was used to connect to the right angle. The left leg sustained four compound fractures. If that was not enough my right clavical was broken along with my neck being broke at C-1. I know that God’s hand was protecting me as my break was called a starburst break which broke away from the spinal cord. Doctors reported that if it had broke the other way I would have died or had been paralyzed. Due to the accident I sustained severe head trauma on the right side of my brain with significant swelling. I actually passed away twice that evening via bleeding out from the trauma to my legs. The left leg has a rod and two screws. The right leg has a rod, two plates and seventeen screws. Most who know me know that I am a fighter. I went through many surgeries and was told that I would never walk again. I remained in a wheelchair for approximately four years. I did fight so that I was able to walk again short distances with the aid of cane. Due to being injured in the line of duty while serving in the Army I began vocational rehab in which I was able to attend college so that I could someday be employed again. The Lord has been good to me and my family since my accident and has let me feel whole again so that I could provide for my family and live the lifestyle of a professional. For the past thirteen years I have been able to provide for myself and my family until last month. In early August I began having problems with both of my legs. I was unable to walk due to severe pain and swelling. I was confined to sitting in my recliner for a week with the swelling and pain still persisting. At that point I was brought to the local hospital and was found to have blood clots behind my left knee. I was diagnosed with lymphedema and cellulitis and I am still being treated for it. Also was found to have sleep apnea and placed on a CPAC Machine. Due to playing football and being in the military the ACL is torn in both knees. While I was in the VA hospital the Lord again had his hand on me as I was going to be discharged home when apparently due to all the adjustments being made to my blood as well as the pain medication being given to me they thought one of the blood clots had moved to my lung. As a result I coded out and woke up in IC with a tube in my throat. As a result of this I have been getting better every day. I have had a tremendous amount of prayer warriors all over the country praying for me. I would like to thank you for your prayers and continued support. Currently I am scared and I know that I have to place my complete trust and faith in the Lord providing for recovery and care. Due to being a sub-contractor I did not have regular insurance other than the VA. I have become very humble as I have watched the material possession that myself and my wife have accumulated over the years which made us happy. Gone are my toys such as my gun collection, motorcycles, cars and trucks, to name a few. I have at times become very depressed thinking of how to pay a bill or next month’s rent. I have found faith in the bible and praying and will let the Lord direct me and provide for me. I will continue to give updates to everyone. Please pray for my recovery and care of my family. Sending love and God’s good will to all of my friends and prayer warriors. Mike Bailey
