Howdy yall, well as you know Im in truck driving school, so far to date we have had two weeks of classroom learning general trucking knowledge and air brake systems and safety. My overall test score was 95. We had to take the truck driving exam at the Nevada DMV to get our permit so we could drive them in this course, I took and passed all five exams, General Knowledge, Air Brake Systems, Tankers, Doubles and Triples and Safe Driving. Beginning yesterday Monday, we all had to pass an oral exam labeled Pre Trip Inspection, we was given a list of four pages of things that have to be checked before the truck is even started, there are 90 items on there that have to be checked off. I passed with a 78 out of a possible 90, that was yesterday morning, three other guys passed the exam so those of us who passed got to climb in the cab and practice backing a 53 foot trailer. I used to drive a Chevy 2500 stake body and a Ford long bed stake body and I pulled a 14 foot trailer for Cox in San Diego, I had to back one of those two trucks every morning in the dark through a narrow gate in to a warehouse and off load it with a fork lift. Backing a 53 foor trailer is easier than backing a 14 foot trailer, after an hour back in the saddle I was backing straight and narrow, then we did off set backing, pull the rig up straight, and back in to a slot next to it, again no sweat. Today me and the same three guys got to go out to an area and practice shifting up and down and cornering, while the rest of the class are still trying to pass the oral exam. Depending on how we do at the shifting range tomorrow we may be actually doing some city driving by Thursday then take our final hands on driving exams this coming week. I have a company who is interested in me, it is ROEHL pronounced as RAIL, they are mostly flat beds but they do have some enclosed trailers, being a flat bedder is work, tarping and strapping and tieing a load but hey they pay you for that too. And they are long haul coast to coast so I will see some pretty country. Now tell me what little boy has not dreamed of one day driving a big rig, well my chance is here and Im gonna grab on with both hands and enjoy the ride, good money and a bit of freedom doing what I always wanted to do.
