However, generally Whiteman’s music was arranged (Ferde Grofe arranger), or composed with little use of improvisation, or else improvisations that are written out (much like cadenzas in classical concertos.) This is most apparent in his commission of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for a special evening at Carnegie Hall (1924). George Gershwin began writing songs for Tin Pan Alley, but by the 1920s he was writing for Broadway along with his brother Ira Gershwin and Buddy DeSylva. He also studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, a famous teacher to many classical composers. His most famous works are Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris (1928), as well as the opera Porgy and Bess (1935), set in Harlem. He moved to Hollywood and composed numerous film scores, and a film titled and featuring his Rhapsody. https://youtube/watch?v=1U40xBSz6Dc
