However, most consumers here know little of the health dangers it poses. Coupled with that is the risk it poses to the “imaan” of Muslims, as the root of this product can be of haram animal origin. MSG was invented in 1908 by Kikunae Ikeda of Tokyo, Japan, who discovered that it has flavour-enhancing properties, and Japanese company Ajinomoto, Co, Inc became the largest manufacturer and exporter of the food ingredient. The salt can be extracted from both plant and animal origins. Today, the glutamic acid compound of MSG is generally made from bacterial and microbial fermentation. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that a combination of free amino acids, animal fats and oils and certain optional ingredients are used in the manufacturing of this salt. Food encyclopaedias discuss this process to some extent but interestingly, articles on MSG are generally written by people who work for Ajinomoto. The entire glutamate industry is opposed to letting consumers know the details about MSG. Why? Because it knows that MSG is a toxic substance. It can cause adverse reactions, brain lesions, endocrine disorders, learning disorders, strokes, epilepsy, anxiety, depression, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. There was controversy in Indonesia in January 2001, when some Islamic clerics found that the MSG supplied to Indonesian supermarkets by Ajinomoto contained pork extracts. The Japanese company withdrew the entire stock of MSG, 10 tonnes, and now other Islamic countries including Pakistan should be concerned at the possibility that the removed stock was redirected here. After all, a manufacturer seldom destroys its products if there is an alternate market available. mehreen f ishaque YouTv Archtv PK The Arch News Tux E PadE tech
